A Systematic Approach

The Gonstead System of Chiropractic utilises a systematic approach to analyse and pinpoint a problem found along the spine or on other joints. It consists of 6 steps, all which are outlined below.

Specific Adjustments

The adjustment is a gentle push  at the specific problematic joint or bone. The noise you may fear hearing is not bone scraping on bone but the release of air escaping from the capsule in the joint.

What are we really looking out for?

being systematic and accurate but what for?

the problem

Segmental Joint
Dysfunctions

Also known as Subluxations, they can be found along the spine and on any other joints in the body.

On a spine, you might be feeling pain or discomfort at two distinct regions, for example the mid back and the lower back.

In most cases, only one or two true problematic region exist while the other region would be a compensating region.

Both types of region may experience similar pain or discomfort.

The foundation theory can be used to explain the scenario experienced at both regions, as depicted in the pictures beside.

The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is obvious that there are no problems with the entire building itself. Instead, the foundation where the tower was built on is the real problem here. The ground itself appears flat yet the highest floor of the tower experience the most tilt.

This is the human spine. The foundation (in oval) appears almost leveled yet it causes the structures above to tilt. The mid-back (in circle) appears to be compensating for what has happened beneath it. Pain or discomfort may be experienced in both areas.

In reality, finding “foundations”, or better known as subluxations, and compensations are not as straightforward as what was depicted. The problem may not come from beneath but they can arise from the neck as well, going top-down instead.

A great deal of skill and knowledge is required by a Gonstead Chiropractor to pin-point the exact problems along the spine, differentiating which is what. The Gonstead Chiropractor will be doing that utilizing 6 essential steps.

Investigating the underlying cause

An analytical approach for a specific problem

Finding the problem

6 Evaluation Steps

1. History Taking

Your Chiropractor will take a thorough history of your presenting complaint and include your overall health and medical history. This is vital to understand your condition and to advice you accordingly.

2. Visualisation

This is a way to cross reference all the other findings. Your Chiropractor is an expert in looking for subtle changes in your posture and movement which could indicate any problems.

3. Instrumentation

The Nervoscope detects changes in skin temperature which is indicative of inflammation due to a subluxation. It is glided gently down the spine from the neck towards the pelvic joint and it is pain-free.

4. Static Palpation

This is simply the process of feeling your spine in a stationary position. Your Chiropractor will feel for the presence of swelling, tenderness and any abnormal texture or tightness along the muscles and other tissues of your back.

5. Motion Palpation

This process involves feeling the spine while moving and bending the body at various angles. This enables the Chiropractor to determine how easily or difficult each segment in your spine moves in different directions.

6. X-Ray Analysis

Xrays of the spine allows the Chiropractor to visualise and evaluate joint integrity.  It also helps to rule out any other pathology and is a valuable guide to ensure a specific adjustment.
